The following are some frequent questions and comments about insurance I have heard throughout the years that may or not be true.

MYTH:If I have a homeowner’s claim my insurance company automaticly cancels my insurance.
FACT:It depends on many things. The size and severity of the claim, how many years you have been with the company and other factors all contribute to whether or not you may be non-renewed by the company.
MYTH:I have a red car, does that make my automobile insurance more expensive?
FACT: The color of your vehicle plays no role in the pricing of your automobile insurance. In fact, we don’t know what color your car is. Some factors that will affect your automobile insurance are the age of your vehicle, the make, model and if you have an alarm.
MYTH: I am a sole proprietor and do not need workers compensation in PA.
FACT: The second someone other than you is working you absolutely need workers compensation insurance. Whether or not you are a sole proprietor or a corporation, and it is required in the state of Pennsylvania that any employee be covered by workers compensation. Even a family member working for you has to be covered. If you do not have worker compensation, you can be fined for every day you dont have coverage.
Also, sole proprioters CAN get Workers compensation insurance in recent years. Parterships & LLC’s will be eligible as of August 29, 2011.
MYTH: All I need to carry is the state minimum in insurance. (15,000/30,000 in Bodily Injury, $5,000 property damage)
FACT: This is OK if you have enough money to pay the perosn that you hurt in your at fault accident!
What if you get in an accident and a whole family is hurt and they are driving a $75,000 Mercades Benz? Your policy is only going to pay a maximum $30,000 for the family’s injuries, and $5,000 their totalled Benz. And when they sue you, who’s pocket is the rest of that money coming from? You guessed it! YOU! This can be a burden on you for the rest of your life.
For this reason, we do not write the state minimum. We actually CARE about you.
MYTH: You can’t buy flood insurance if you’re in a high-flood-risk area.
FACT: If your community participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), you can buy National Flood Insurance no matter where you live.
MYTH: Homeowners insurance policies cover flooding.
FACT: Most home and business “multi-peril” policies do not cover flooding. Homeowners can include personal property coverage in their NFIP policy, and residential and commercial renters can purchase flood coverage for their contents. Business owners can buy flood insurance coverage for their buildings, inventory and contents.
MYTH: I bought “full coverage” so everything’s paid for.
FACT: There is no such thing as “full coverage.” In PA, only liability insurance is mandatory. There are a lot of other coverage options out there, so select what you need and can afford based on your personal situation. Full coverage typically means you carry Comprehensive & Collision. This does not mean Full Tort, Rental reimburstment and towing & labor/Roadside assistance. These are all separate coverages and listed individually.
MYTH: If I lend my car to someone and he/she crashes it, I’m covered.
FACT: Not so fast. If you or your friend don’t have optional physical damage coverages, damage to your vehicle generally won’t be covered.
